Secretary of State Hillary Clinton fainted and suffered a concussion after battling a stomach virus.
Clinton had been suffering from the virus when she fainted Saturday, CNN reports. The fall resulted in a mild concussion and is currently resting and recovering at home a State Department official noted.
Deputy assistant secretary of state Philippe Reins released a statement on behalf of the incident which says, “At their recommendation, she will continue to work from home next week, staying in regular contact with Department and other officials. She is looking forward to being back in the office soon.”
In addition to her virus, NBC News reports that Clinton’s grueling schedule could have also attributed to the fainting.
NBC’s chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snderman explains, “If a patient has been logging millions of miles a year and is tired and not eating or drinking the right things in a couple of days, a shift in blood volume can cause fainting.”
According to CNN, Clinton was scheduled to testify following the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya that resulted in the deaths of four Americans and the U.S ambassador, CNN notes.
Due to her condition, Clinton will not be able to appear before the committee Thursday as previously planned.
