The 23-year-old medical student whose rape and murder has prompted nationwide outrage in India planned to marry the man who was beaten alongside her, according to friends. The woman was pronounced dead from massive internal injuries in Singapore on Saturday.
“They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi,” said Meena Rai, who was a close friend and neighbor, reported The Telegraph. “I really loved this girl. She was the brightest of all.”
The national discussion on woman’s rights, corruption, and a lopsided justice system has been almost unprecedented for India. Ruling party leader Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Mannmohan Singh were among those to receive her body at the airport. Issues like rape, dowry, and female infanticide are rare in political discourse, according to NBC News.
Protests continued in many cities, in the capital some metro stations and roads remained closed as thousands of extra police officers remained on alert. India’s police forces themselves are at the heart of the protests, as they are suspected in thousands of sexual assault cases that go unreported.
