Kansas pursuing sperm donor for child support

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

In 2009, one man donated his sperm to a lesbian couple, Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner, and now he is being asked to pay child support.

Kansas City Star reports that a local man donated his sperm and signed away all parental rights to a Topeka couple so they could have a child. After the couple sought support from the state to financially support the child, the court is attempting to go after the man as the father of the child.

William Marotta, the man who donated his sperm and his team are arguing that asking him for support goes against the 2007 ruling on sperm donors.

According to the report, Bauer and Schreiner described themselves in the Craigslist ad as ““financially stable lesbian couple” who are “foster and adoptive parents, and now we desire to share a pregnancy and birth together.”

Marotta was offered $50 per semen donation which he later declined.

On October 3, 2012 a petition was filed against Marotta on behalf of Department of Children and Families seeking the payment back of $189 a month as well as $6,000 a month.

According to Huffington Post, Bauer and Schreiner signed an agreement releasing Marotta from all financial responsibility. However, the state argues because the sperm was not inseminated by a professional doctor the contract is void.
