This is the ultimate wedding present. After marrying his nephew and saving his mother, Richard Branson is flying actress Kate Winslet into space on a Virgin Galactic flight.
The U.K. Sun is reporting that Branson gave Winslet a £124,000 ticket for free following her marriage to Ned Rocknroll, Branson’s nephew. It was also a thank you gift for rescuing his mother when a fire broke out on his Caribbean island last year.
Rocknroll works part time for Branson’s Virgin Galactic, which hopes to launch flights to space next year. Several celebrities have already signed on, including comedian Russell Brand and actor Ashton Kutcher. Branson has also given a free ticket to scientist Stephen Hawking.
Each flight takes people 60 miles above the earth, where tourists will feel weightlessness and can see the curvature of the earth.
According to Entertainmentwise, Branson spoke about Winslet’s wishes to go into space before. “She wants to go into space. I'm not sure she wants to go on a one-way trip to Mars, but she wants to go into space,” the billionaire said in September.
Winslet, 37, and Rocknroll, 34, married in secret in New York. Her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio was on hand to give the bride away. The couple didn’t even tell their parents right away.
They also have plans for a celebration on Branson’s island Necker.
