Instagram released its list of the most Instagramed places in the world. While it is dominated by popular tourist destinations in the U.S., the two locations that topped the list are both in Thailand.
The list starts with Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, which is followed by the city’s Siam Paragon shopping mall. Instagram said that over 100,000 photos were taken at the airport.
Those locations surprised some travel experts, who would have expected the list to include more cultural places. “I would have thought that cultural places would have made the list rather than just a brand new high-tech mall and a brand new high-tech airport,” Catherine Heald, CEO of Remote Lands, told NBC News. “But I guess that shows you that kids these days – they’re the ones using Instagram so this shows their tastes.”
Seven of the rest of the locations on the list are in the U.S., but only one of those is outside of California. New York’s Times Square is the only location on the East Coast.
The locations from California include Disneyland, AT&T Park in San Francisco, Dodger Stadium in LA, LAX, the Staples Center, and Santa Monica Pier.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris was the only location in Europe to make the cut.
Instagram has had a busy year. In May, it was named the breakout of the year by the Webby Awards and was purchased by Facebook in April for $1 billion. However, it was dealt a public relations disaster when the company posted new terms of service for next year. The company later clarified the terms of service, saying that they do not intend to sell user's photos.
