Some The Office fans were probably a little disappointed to know that NBC passed on the Dwight Schrute-centric spin-off The Farm, but co-creator Greg Daniels says that the Farm pilot will still air during The Office’s final season.
Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight, confirmed in October that the network passed on the show, which would have introduced viewers to the bizarre Schrute family members Dwight mentions on The Office. Majandra Delfino, Thomas Middleditch, Matt Jones and Blake Garrett were all cast to play members of the family.
The plan was to launch the show using a planted pilot during The Office’s final season. Daniels told TV Line that fans will still get to see the pilot, although with a few extra scenes.
Daniels called the pilot “a very good episode” and noted that it could have a positive effect on The Office, particularly for Dwight and Angela’s relationship.
“We’re not going to air exactly what it was, because it has certain aspects that were appropriate for a pilot of a new show,” he explained. “We’re going to shoot a little additional material to make it fit into the season more.”
The Office is currently in the middle of its ninth and final season. The show will return on Jan. 10.
