The New Orleans Hornets are seriously considering a name change. The top choice name from the organization is presumably the Louisiana state bird, the Pelican.
Ever since new team owner Tom Benson, who has the rights to the nickname Pelicans, purchased the team, they have been considering this name change. This gives the team a chance to have a nickname that is linked to the state.
According to Yahoo! Sports, from 1887-1959 and 1977, a minor league baseball team in New Orleans was nicknamed the Pelicans. Among the choices that were available, Krewe and Brass were also at the top.
The current Charlotte Bobcats could take back the nickname Hornets if the New Orleans franchise changes its name.
According to ESPN, after being asked about the subject, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said an a recent interview, "It's definitely an interest down the road, but right now it's the New Orleans Hornets. We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That's as much as we can say right now. We've heard the community ask the question, and we would listen."
