Star Trek fans got an early Christmas present today thanks to Empire magazine, which unveiled a cover featuring Star Trek Into Darkness and a slew of new images for the film. Director J.J. Abrams also may have dropped some hints about the film’s plot.
Coming days after the first teaser and the long trailer shown before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted, Empire’s latest issue has two covers. One features Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, while the other shows Benedict Cumberbatch in handcuffs. We’re still not sure about Cumberbatch’s character’s identity, although he recently referred to the character as John Harrison.
“JJ described the role in movie terms as a mixture of Hannibal Lector, Jack in The Shining and The Joker in Batman,” he told GyaO!, reports TrekMovie.com. “There are sorts of levels to pitch in amongst quite a high bar as well to succeed in comparison to. It was a framework to understand this character before I saw the whole script.”
Abrams spoke about the film, revealing that someone may lose a key family member. “I don't like going to the movies to feel bad,” he explained, reports IndieWire. “I don't like going to the movies to feel depressed and feel diminished. The reason you go to the movies is to feel bigger and stronger and happier. So this is a movie that they certainly go Into Darkness, but I would be the wrong director if it was about characters staying there. This is very much a movie about hope, about love, about romance, and about facing something that is truly terrifying and finding a way through the connection of your family and surviving and being stronger afterwards.”
The magazine also included several never-before-seen images, including the one below of Zachary Quinto as Spock.
Here’s the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser. The film hits theaters on May 17, 2013.
