When Nirvana reunites for the Hurricane Sandy benefit concert tonight, former Beatles Paul McCartney will fill in for the late Kurt Cobain.
For tonight’s Madison Square Garden concert that will benefit victims of the superstorm, it’s been reported that Dave Grohl asked the legendary musician to join them in the place of Cobain.
The surviving members of the band will be on stage together for the first time in 20 years and McCartney, Grohl and Krist Novoselic have been rehearsing for the performance in secret.
“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?” McCartney told The Sun. “And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
According to The NY Daily News, Cobain and Novoselic formed Nirvana in the ‘80s, with Grohl joining in the ‘90s. Cobain then took his own life in 1994.
The Rolling Stones, Kanye West, Eric Clapton, The Who, Alicia Keys and more will also be performing at the 12/12/12 benefit concert.
