Police have revealed the names of the two victims and the shooter of the mall shooting in the Portland, Oregon area Tuesday afternoon. The shooter was Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, who shot himself when police arrived at the scene.
The shooting took place at the Clackamas Town Center. Roberts managed to tire at least 60 shots and Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts told the media early Wednesday that he appeared to randomly firing at people. “It's very apparent he had a mission set forth to take the lives of people in that mall,” he told Today.
During a press conference, Roberts revealed the names of the two victims, who were Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, and Cindy Ann Yuille, 54. Kristina Shevchenko, 15, was injured and is still in critical condition. She underwent surgery Wednesday.
Roberts said that they could still not determine a motive for the shooting. “At this time we do not understand the motive of this attack,” he said, stressing that there is “No apparent relationship between the suspect and his victims.”
Jacob Tyler Roberts entered the mall through a Macy’s store, wearing a “hockey-style mask” and a bullet-proof mask. He used a AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, which he had stolen.
According to USA Today, Roberts said that there would have been more victims if police hadn’t arrived when the shooter’s rifle jammed. The sheriff called the shooting a “heartbreaking tragedy by any standard.”
The mall is one of the busiest and largest in Oregon. Around 10,000 people were at the mall at the time of the shooting at 3:30 p.m. It has 185 stores and a 20-screen movie theater.
