Rapper Fat Joe pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges today. He allegedly failed to pay his taxes for two years and could get up to two years in prison.
According to TMZ, the rapper, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, allegedly failed to pay the federal government $700,000 in income taxes in 2007 and 2008.
Although Cartagena lives in Miami Beach, Florida, he appeared in court today in New Jersey. The Associated Press reports that the rapper earned some of his millions thanks to companies incorporated in the state.
He was freed on a $250,000 bond, but will be required to return to court in April for sentencing. He could receive up to two years in prison.
Cartagena’s hits include “What’s Luv?,” “Lean Back” and “Make it Rain.” He released his latest album, The Darkside Vol. 1, back in 2010.
Cartagena, 42, is a die-hard New York Knicks fan and was recently spotted sitting courtside and goes to games whenever he visits New York, he told The New York Times last month.
