Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott has picked another television project, signing on to direct the pilot of The Vatican for Showtime.
It is the first project for 2013 to receive a pilot order from the network and comes from Scott and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Paul Attanasio. Deadline reports that the series is described as a contemporary thriller with religion, power and politics at the center. It is considered to be a show similar to The Sopranos, but set in the Vatican, looking at the relationships, rivalries and mysteries within the secretive organizations.
According to Entertainment Weekly, this is the Alien director’s first ever TV pilot, although he has acted as producer on several TV projects. He is currently working on The Counselor with Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender and recently directed Prometheus this year. He has been nominated for a Best Director Oscar three times.
Attanasio was nominated for Oscars for Quiz Show and Donnie Brasco. his involvement in The Vatican forced him to pull out of Rake a project that would star Greg Kinnear.
The Vatican will be produced by Sony Pictures TV.
