Shakira gives birth? Boyfriend Gerard Pique tricks Twitter followers

Soccer star Gerard Pique had his Twitter followers believing that his girlfriend, Latin pop star Shakira, had given birth to their first child on Thursday for a few hours. Today, though, he revealed that it was just a joke.

According to Us Weekly, Pique, who plays for Barcelona FC, tweeted in Spanish, “Our son has been born! We are very happy! Thanks to all for your messages” on Thursday.

Ya ha nacido nuestro hijo! Estamos muy felices! Gracias a todos por vuestros mensajes!

The news surprised many, since the couple did not confirm the pregnancy until September. They did confirm later that they are expecting a boy.

Pique left his 4.7 million followers hanging until early Friday, when he tweeted, “It has a name! His name is Innocent!” He added, “Happy Dia de los Inocentes to all!” referring to the holiday, which is celebrated in Mexico and Spain. It is similar to April Fool’s Day.

Shakira herself has not tweeted anything since Monday. Earlier this month, she posted a picture of herself and Pique with the caption, “I could have another nine months like this.”

In addition to welcoming her first child next year, Shakira will also be a mentor on NBC’s THe Voice for the show’s spring season.
