The latest Survivor winner was crowned Sunday night, with actress Lisa Whelchel, previous contestant Michael Skupin and Denise Stapley competing for the $1 million.
Stapley, a 41-year-old Iowa sex therapist, won the game, and was presented with a check of the winnings. “In Iowa, you can't do a lot with this,” she joked, reports USA Today.
Whelchel, who starred on The Facts of Life, didn’t leave without a prize though. She won the $100,000 Sprint Player of the Season award, which is picked by an online poll, according to The Hollywood Gossip.
The show was followed by a live reunion special, which included a moment of silence for the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut shootings.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to the finalists after the show.
“I'm going to take my time and breathe, and then make a lot of decisions,” Stapley told THR when asked what her plans are for the $1 million prize. “My husband and I are going to sit down and make a lot of decisions. We have a 9-year-old daughter who, first and foremost, needs a college fund that is fully loaded and taken care of. We've got nieces and nephews. I mean $1 million in Iowa could be really life-changing. We just want to take our time.”
Whelchel has a future with the show and plans on guest co-hosting episodes of host Jeff Probst’s syndicated talk show. She told THR, “When I applied for Survivor, they asked, 'Why do you want to do it?' I love Survivor, and I love Jeff Probst. I got to be on Survivor, and now I get to guest host with him.”
