By Stephanie Marcell,

There is no better time of the year to spend time with your family than the holiday season. Yes, we are all busy shopping around for that special gift for our loved ones, but let’s not forget to stop and make time to just enjoy the company of our loved ones.

This year is the perfect year to begin a new tradition or try a new activity with your family.

Here are the Top 10 activities to do with your family this holiday season.

10. Make a gingerbread house

The kitchen is always a fun place to share with loved ones. It gives everyone a chance to “just talk.” Don’t forget to turn off the television and turn on some holiday tunes while you construct a family gingerbread house.

9. Holiday movie marathon

Carve out a special night where the family snuggles up together and watches a family friendly movie. Make the night special with popcorn in holiday containers.

8. Make and send holiday cards together

Set a time for the family to get together and create a holiday card to mail out to friends and family. Parents, don’t dictate to the kids what the card will be, give everyone a chance to give input on the card selection. There are many digital programs that offer ways to personalize greeting cards like Shutterfly.

7. Go Caroling

Gather as many friends and family members together as you can and host a carolling party. Begin the night with a light and warm dinner, such as hearty soup and a warm beverage. Decide on 3-4 songs to sing during dinner for the carol. After the meal, go out and knock on doors and sing one of the chosen selections. Finish the night with hot coffee, tea, or cocoa.

6. Track Santa online

Yes, there are a number of sites that are dedicated to tracking Santa as they count down to Christmas. Websites like NoradSanta.org offer activities and games for kids and adults.

5. Go on a Holiday Lights Tour

FamilyEducation suggests piling everyone into the car and taking a drive to different neighborhoods known for extravagant light displays.

4. Go ice skating

This is a fun way to get everyone outside for a fun time. Ice skating rinks are gaining popularity across the country.

3. Go to a holiday play

Many local churches and schools put on fundraiser productions of holiday classics like The Nutcracker or A Christmas Carol. Or even better, visit the downtown theatre as a family, although this will certainly be more costly.

2. Attend a Christmas Parade

Find the nearest parade and make sure you're there. It's a great activity that is totally free. Not only will this create a family memory but will get everyone out of the house.

1. Volunteer as a family

Go help at the local shelter or soup kitchen. Host a toy drive. The possibilities are endless. Volunteering as a family is a meaningful way to spend time together.
