2012 turned out to be another great year for films. Some new stories
started, while some series have found an ending. With New Years just a few days away, it seemed logical to look back on the year and check out the top ten films of 2012 in the US. Judging by the list, it was a very good year.
10.) Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted
This third installment of the Madagascar movie series, and the
first to be released in 3D, was the highest grossing film of the
series with worldwide gross of $742 million. Released on June 8,
Madagascar 3 brings all our favorite characters back in their
mission to get back to New York, but find themselves caught in Europe along with a failing traveling circus, as shenanigans ensue.
This comedy is Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane's directing debut,
and it was a hit. This comedy featuring the voice of MacFarlane as
Ted, alongside Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis is the highest grossing
original R-rated comedy of all time. It's very funny, and plans for a
sequel exist to look forward to.
8.) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The first of a three series prequel to The Lord Of The Rings
Trilogy from Peter Jackson, The Hobbit: An Unexpected
Journey had Lord Of The Rings fans everywhere thrilled.
This adaptation, very similar to the way the Star Wars series
came out with their movies, goes back to the beginning of the story,
and look for the follow ups in the next couple years.
This 3D computer animated film from Pixar was quite an original. It's
based in the Scottish Highlands of a princess archer on a mission to
undo a spell set on her family. It's funny, as well as entertaining.
Pixar rewrote their animation systems for the first time in 25 years
to create the most complex visuals possible. I enjoyed this one.
6.) The Amazing Spider-Man
This classic superhero film is another take on the comic book series
Spiderman. Following the previous Spiderman films
starring Toby McGuire and Kirsten Dunst, The Amazing Siderman features Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone which is more of a direct adaptation to the comic book. It did well commercially and falls to the six spot in the list.
5.) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
The hit sensation vampire series continues to bask in the glory of
success. The film adaptation series based off of Stephanie Meyer's
Twilight Saga books features Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, and has built an established fan-base, many of whom are teenage girls. This is the last film of the series so it made it's way to number five on the list.
Cue the Adele, the twenty third James Bond film Skyfall was
released this year, featuring the third performance as Daniel Craig as
James Bond. A storyline as complex as usual, it focuses on Bond
investigating an attack on MI6. The film doesn't hold anything back,
featuring the general action packed theme that accompanies all bond
movies, of course with plenty of finesse. It's certainly worth a
3.) The Hunger Games
This feature film is the first installment in an adaptation of The
Hunger Games book series from Suzanne Collins, directed by Gary Ross. Starring Jennifer Lawrence among others, The Hunger Games was highly anticipated upon release, and featuring a truly unique storyline, it's simply awesome. I loved the film as well as the book series, and I can't wait to see the next couple installments in the
2.) The Dark Knight Rises
The latest and final Batman installment from Christopher Nolan,
featuring Christian Bale as Batman was another huge success. It
focuses on a retired Batman, drawn back into action due to new threats to Gotham City. It was a phenomenal film featuring new villains, and managed to become the seventh highest grossing film of all-time. It's simply a must-see.
1.) Marvel’s The Avengers
What's not to love? The Avengers is another superhero movie, featuring many of our comic book favorites all on one team. This action packed Marvel comic feature is simply awesome. It's become the third highest grossing film of all
time, and you'd know why if you viewed it. There's a sequel planned
for a release in 2015, and I can't wait!
2012 was an excellent year. Some movies released have become instant favorites. Some series ended while others are simply just beginning.
Superhero films have taken the crown of the year, with animated films
doing good as well. All we can do now is enjoy these movies released,
and look forward to what films 2013 has in store
