Country music has deep roots in the South, but Trace Adkins's relation to the Confederation caused a riot last Wednesday when he took the stage at NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Square rocking an earpiece decorated with the Confederate flag.
According to USA Today, Adkins had previously worn this earpiece on Nov. 19 while performing at the Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday window unveiling.
It can be assumed the stir was caused by the visibility of the earpiece on national television, resulting with an outrage via Twitter.
Adkins later wrote on his website, “As a proud American I object to oppression of any kind. To me, the battle flag represents remembrance of my Southern lineage – I am a descendant of Confederate soldiers who followed that flag into battle. I advocate for the preservation of America’s battlefields and honest conversation about our Country’s history. To those who view the flag as a symbol of racism, that was not my message and I did not intend offense.”
