Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is reportedly one of the top candidates for US ambassador to either the UK or France.
Two people close to the matter told Bloomberg News that President Obama is looking to reward one of his biggest supporters during his successful reelection campaign. Wintour is at the top of his list for the positions, although campaign finance chairman Matthew Barzun is another strong candidate for the UK post.
Marc Lasry, the founder of Avenue Capital Management, is also in the running for the position at the Paris embassy.
Wintour and Barzun both donated $500,000 to help Obama get re-elected.
Vogue spokeswoman Megan Salt would not confirm the report when asked by ABC News. Salt would only say that Wintour is “very happy with her current job.”
Wintour hosted several major fundraisers during the campaign, including a $40,000-per-plate event in New York at Sarah Jessica Parker’s home. She also co-hosted Harvey Weinstein’s $35,000-per-plate event at his home in Connecticut. Obama was at both events.
The White House, Lasry and Barzun did not comment on Bloomberg’s story. Barzun is a former ambassador to Sweden.
Obama has appointed donors to ambassadorships in the past. For example, Louis Susman, the current UK ambassador, was a key Obama fundraiser in 2008.
