Walmart CEO Mike Duke claims that the popular retail company does have competitive wages.
According to the Huffington Post, Walmart employees’ wages average at about $11.75 per hour. Still, there is a wide range between the lowest pay, $8.81 and the highest, $12.40.
Following numerous protests by unhappy Walmart employees for better pay, benefits, and sick days, Bloomberg LP President Dan Doctoroff publicly asked Duke how he paid his workers.
Doctoroff pointed out that current wages did not seem adequate enough to meet the middle class’ cost of living.
Duke replied with examples why this was false, and assured that his associates were a great source of pride and inspiration for him.
According to Business Insider, he said that his 2.2 million employees were paid competitive salaries and had opportunities to move up within the company. “Last year we promoted 165,000 people from entry-level to managerial positions," he added proudly.
In addition, Duke mentioned that Walmart provides health insurance to nearly 1 million people in the U.S.
