This Week In Comics: 12/5

By Michael R. Murray,

We’re bearing down on Christmas and inevitably, every year without fail, I ask for a gift certificate from my favorite retailer.  Whether it’s for a preorder or that back issue I want to upgrade to but it’s just a little out of my price range (and my price range is sometimes way too stupid for my wallet or my wife).  As collectors I know we can be picky and sometimes that gem is just so worth it, but the Christmas discovery of something wonderful is a magical experience.

So with that thought out of the way, let’s take a look at what we’re expecting on shelves this week…

Dark Horse Comics has got a couple of new series starting with Hellboy In Hell #1, $2.99, by Mike Mignola with a cover assist by Dave Stewart.  Mignola returns to draw Hellboy’s ongoing story for the first time since Conqueror Worm.  Hellboy is dead and in Hell and his throne awaits him…

Alexander Freed is writing Star Wars: Purge Tyrants Fist #1 (of 2), $3.50, which is drawn by Marco Castiello and Andrea Chella with a cover illustration by Michael Atiyeh and Dan Scott.  Shortly after the birth of the Empire, Darth Vader continues his purge of the Jedi…

The first sell out we’ve got this week is from IDW and Matt Forbeck, Martin Coccolo, and Dan Scott in their presentation of Magic the Gathering: Path of Vengeance #1, $4.99.  Dack Faydon returns to Ravnica to uncover the plot by the malevolent Sifa Grent.  All while being pursued by Rakdos cultists and Boros soldiers and someone from his past, who may just put an end to the Planeswalker thief.  These Magic comics with their new exclusive art cards are still pretty solid sellers and I’ve heard good things from the fans who’ve bought the previous comics…

Image Comics has a sold out book in the form of Blackacre #1, $2.99, written by Duffy Boudreau and drawn by Wendell Cavalcanti and Sergio Abad featuring a cover by Michael Avon Oeming.  100 years after the fall, a retired soldier is sent out of the walled city and the only life he’s ever known.  This promises to be a startling new take on the post-apocalypse, and it’s marked for Mature Readers…

Marvel Comics All New X-Men #3, $3.99, is sold out as well.  Written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Stuart Immonen, this book has really impressed me so far.  In this issue find out what happened to the Pheonix 5 from Avengers vs. X-Men…

Amazing Spider-man #699, $3.99, by Dan Slott, Humberto Ramos, and Paolo Rivera is also sold out.  This is the issue that reveals all of the secrets that have been set out as far back as Amazing Spider-man #600.  Doc Ock has only hours left to live and there’s no master plan anymore, he just wants revenge…

My new favorite publisher, Valiant Comics, is shipping out Shadowman #2, $3.99, by Justin Jordan and Patrick Zircher.  Jack Boniface is the new Shadowman and he’s either going to learn what he’s doing or die.  Look for one heck of a first night on the job here…

And plenty more that’s not listed.  For a more complete list, feel free to visit your local comic store or favorite site.  If you’re interested in more of what I think, follow me on Twitter at Mycomicstore001 or like my Facebook page.

Michael R. Murray is a full time Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service who believe it or not is already making plans for what he hopes to do and accomplish at the Boston Comic Con in April.
