YouTube counts down the Top 10 videos of the year (Videos)

By Daniel S Levine,

Google’s YouTube released its list of the Top 10 videos of 2012 that went viral. Unless you’ve been living under a rock since July, the No. 1 pick shouldn’t be a surprise.

This year’s list is the continuation of a trend that YouTube has picked up on. Nine of the 10 on the list were made by professionals. “There are more and more people who know how to build an audience, how to use YouTube,” trends manager Kevin Allocca told the Wall Street Journal. “There are companies who spend millions and millions of dollars trying to do create these videos.”

The only video not made professionally is “Facebook Parenting,” the video that made headlines showing a father shooting bullets into his teenagers laptop. It reached the No. 9 slot on the list and now has 35.5 million views since it was posted in February.

Most of the other videos are music videos, including Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” video with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and others.

Politics are also on the list, including the Kony 2012 documentary, which is up to 94 million views, and ERB’s Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney. Epic Rap Battles Of History.

Of course, the No. 1 video of the year had to be PSY’s “Gangnam Style,” which became the most-watched YouTube video in history last month when it topped over 800 million views. It’s not up to a staggering 971 million views.
