Zac Posen to take Michael Kors' place on 'Project Runway,' new season to focus on team challenges

By Krista Alice Hornyak,

Zac Posen will be the new featured judge on Lifetime’s Project Runway, replacing Michael Kors.

Kors’ current schedule did not allow for a full-time commitment to the series, but he’s not leaving for good. He will come back for the season finale as a guest judge.

“When I was a guest judge, I saw [Michael] was always a generous, warm mentor," Posen told the Associated Press. “This was an amazing opportunity. I hope I’m here to give a new perspective to the designers."

Posen places great emphasis on craft and construction, so he will be paying particular attention to those qualities when judging the contestants’ work.

Among other big changes to Project Runway are that this season, it is going to be a team edition.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the challenges are going to be extra tricky this time around, because designers are going to have to work together while also trying to make their own creations stand out.

The struggle will be worth it. This year’s winner will receive $100,000 to start their line, a spread in Marie Claire, a 2013 Lexus GS 350, a $50,000 technology suite by HP, and the opportunity to sell their collection at Lord & Taylor.

Guest judges will include such legends as Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Joan Rivers, Miranda Lambert, and Christian Siriano.

The new season starts January 24,2013 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.
