Another year has gone by and it has proven to be a successful year at the box office.
Box Office Mojo reports that 2012 has been a record breaking year at the movies, generating more than $10.6 billion this year alone.
The previous record year was 2009, hitting $10.59 billion. Box office receipts are expected to reach $10.8 billion by year’s end, boosted by several popular titles. While it still remains to be seen if recent releases like Les Misérables, Django Unchained, and The Hobbit manage to end up being amongst 2012’s biggest releases, here is the current standing of 2012’s biggest films.
10. The Lorax
The first of three animated movies to make the list, Dr. Seuss’s classic children’s story proved to be a big hit. With a $70.2 million opening weekend, The Lorax had one of the biggest debuts ever for an animated movie.

With a slew of successful television shows already under his belt, including Family Guy and American Dad, Seth Macfarlane made his first foray into the movie world. Ted proved to be another success for Macfarlane, becoming 2012’s biggest comedy.

Pixar shows no signs of slowing down. Brave became the studio’s thirteenth straight movie to debut at the No. 1 spot at the box office. Its first princess movie also became the biggest animated movie of the year.

06. The Amazing Spider-Man
Even though the last new Spider-Man movie came out only five years ago, audiences still turned out to see another spin on the story of the web slinger’s origin. Despite not opening as big as any movie in the previous franchise, it still managed to break the record for the highest grossing Tuesday ever, taking in $35 million on its opening day.

05. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2
The final installment in the Twilight franchise ended the series on a high note. It opened with $141.1 million, making it the eighth biggest opening weekend ever, and the second highest opening for the franchise. The huge opening helped Breaking Dawn – Part 2 stake its claim as one of 2012’s biggest films.
Total Domestic Gross: $283 million
James Bond continues to be a huge box office draw. Skyfall, the 23rd movie starring the British secret agent, opened with over $88 million, giving the series its biggest opening weekend. It also spent an impressive five weeks within the top 2 at the box office. Even more impressive, Skyfall became the biggest movie in the 50 year old 007 franchise.

03. The Hunger Games
This year, The Hunger Games hit a bull’s-eye at the box office. The odds were definitely in the film’s favor, as it opened with $152.5 million, making it the fifth biggest opening weekend ever, and the third biggest opening for a film in 2012. Among non-sequels, The Hunger Games reigns as the biggest opening weekend ever, beating 2010’s Alice in Wonderland. The strong opening, great reviews, and positive word of mouth helped the film top the box office for four weekends in a row, and makes it one of only three films this year to gross over $400 million.

02. The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan’s highly lauded Dark Knight franchise came to an end in 2012 and audiences flocked to see how Batman’s story would end. Although it is impossible to say if the tragedy in Aurora hampered its opening weekend, The Dark Knight still managed to pull in $160 million, making it the third biggest opening weekend ever. The Dark Knight Rises was king of the box office for four weeks in a row, and made enough to be the 7th highest grossing movie of all time.

01. The Avengers
The Avengers are deemed to be Earth’s mightiest heroes, and they proved their might at the box office, smashing records along the way. The superhero team smashed the box office record for biggest opening weekend, grossing over $207 million in its first weekend alone. It also became the fastest movie to reach the $100 million, $150 million, and $200 million milestones. In its opening weekend, it also out earned Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Incredible Hulk, who all star in this film. The movie also went on to gross more than both Iron Man movies. The huge success of The Avengers elevated the superhero movie to be one of only three movies to ever gross more than $600 million, and became the third biggest movie in history.
