Al Roker is known as the fun-loving weatherman on NBC’s Today Show, but he took a serious turn on Dateline this weekend, talking about the effects of his gastric bypass surgery in 2002. Roker gave one piece of extra information that has certainly earned the Internet’s attention, revealing one embarrassing moment at the White House just a few months after the surgery.
“When you have a bypass and your bowel has been reconstructed, you think you're pretty safe,” Roker, 58, told Dr. Nancy Snyderman, reports E! News. “I probably went off and ate something I wasn't supposed to.”
He admitted that he felt like he had to “pass a little gas here. Only a little something extra came out...”
“You pooped your pants,” Snyderman, who noted that this is a common side effect of the surgery, said.
“I pooped my pants,” he continued. “Not horribly, but enough that I knew...So I was panicking. So I got to the restroom of the press room, threw out the underwear and just went commando.”
While Roker’s comment may have been a joke to some on the web, Salon.com notes that it shouldn’t be seen as a laughing matter. It highlights the seriousness of the procedure Roker went through.
“Folks need to know the lengths people will go to lose weight,” he later wrote on Facebook. “A bypass is no easy answer and has a lot of consequences; some embarrassing, some lethal.” That message was met with praise from people who have also had the surgery.
Roker’s book, Never Goin’ Back, comes out this week.
