Penultimate season will open with a two-parter with Jon Hamm directing second half, creator Matthew Weiner says

America’s favorite ad execs will reopen their agency doors when AMC’s Mad Men returns in April for its sixth and penultimate season.

The critical darling drama’s April 7 premiere will again be two hours long and written by creator and showrunner Matthew Weiner, the New York Times reports.

Lead actor Jon Hamm, who stars as philandering ad extraordinaire Don Draper now married to amateur actress Megan (Jessica Paré), will also direct the season’s second episode, according to Today.

Photos of the Hamm and Paré shooting the sixth season on a Hawaii beach clad in retro swimsuits were leaked in October in Vanity Fair. Don Draper apparently still smokes in the late 1960s.

Weiner also told the Times that AMC requested the opener be a two-parter this time around after last year’s successful back-to-back premiere episodes.

“t has some cliffhanger elements to it, it does propel you into the rest of the season — it does foreshadow a lot what the season is about,” he said. “But I was like, I want to write a movie here, that we can create the atmosphere and vibe of the season.”

Weiner said he was initially hesitant about making any bold moves to indicate the series’ ending but wrote this season’s stories with this in mind to finally end the stories of Don Draper, Peggy Olson, Roger Sterling and everyone at SCDP since the show premiered in 2007.

“I did approach this season originally saying, ‘O.K., we can’t do that yet. We shouldn’t do that yet. I’m saving that for here,’” Weiner said, though executive producers Maria and Andre Jacquemetton told him to just go for it like he always does. “So I decided to throw it all in. When you’re on a show where drama is somebody watching a phone ring, you really shouldn’t take out any story ideas you have."

Mad Men will return to regular time slot at 9 p.m. Sunday, April 9.
