Former Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg is returning to television. The actor is set to star in a new Fox pilot from Parks and Recreation writers Mike Schur and Dan Goor.
The project is currently untitled, but it is described as a cop comedy featuring a diverse group of detectives in New york City. Samberg has been cast in the lead detective role, notes Deadline. This is Fox’s first pilot order of the new pilot season.
Schur has an overall deal with Universal TV, so the studio will be producing the project. This is the third time Fox has teamed with NBC’s sibling studio, following Weekends At Bellevue in 2011 and The Mindy Project, which is currently in the middle of its first season.
Samberg actually joined the project in October, notes Deadline and Fox put in a pilot commitment over the summer, but it wasn’t until Friday that they put in an official pilot order.
Samberg left SNL last spring. Over the summer, he co-starred with Adam Sandler in That’s My Boy.
Entertainment Weekly notes that this wasn’t the only pilot news for Friday. NBC put in an order for a drama titled I Am Victor, based on Jo Nesbo’s upcoming novel. It will be written by The West Wing’s Mark Goffman.
CBS also ordered a comedy starring stand-up comic Jim Gaffigan and The CW is preparing a Vampire Diaries spinoff.
During the week, ABC ordered a comedy from the writers of The Hangover titled Mixology.
