Ann Curry has reportedly had enough of her marginalized role at NBC News and wants out of her contract. She could reunite with former Today executive Jeff Zucker, who is now the head of CNN.
Radar Online reported Monday that Curry “wants out of her contract, big time,” according to a source. “However, NBC bosses have indicated they are unwilling to release Ann from the contract. If Ann were to just quit, there is a non-compete clause, which would prohibit her from working for another news outlet for two years,” the source continued.
Curry’s lawyer apparently thinks that they have a case that NBC had breached her contract when she was ousted from the Today co-anchoring job after just a year. She also feels that she has been “sequestered from appearing on the network,” since her appearances on NBC News programs have been few and far between, notes the site’s source.
“Jeff wants a headliner like Rachel Maddow or Bill O’Reilly in prime time,” the Post’s source said at the time. “He cannot allow the low ratings at CNN to continue . . . so he can’t hire a nobody. Curry fits that CNN-smarty-pants-foreign-affairs type.”
However, a CNN rep would only say, “There is no shortage of rumors about what Jeff will do. He doesn’t start until late January, and any speculation at this point is just silly.” An NBC rep reminded the Post, “Ann Curry is under contract with NBC News.”
Curry was pushed out of Today partly due to sagging ratings on the show and was replaced by Savannah Guthrie. However, Guthrie hasn’t immediately saved the show, which faces stiff competition from ABC’s Good Morning America.
