While the world might have been disappointed to hear that Beyonce lip-synced the “Star-Spangled Banner” at Monday’s inauguration, her colleagues are coming out in her support. Aretha Franklin, who performed at President Obama’s first inauguration, found the news to be particularly funny and understood why Beyonce may have chose to mime the National Anthem.
The Queen of Soul spoke to ABC News and agreed that Beyonce “did a beautiful job.”
“But, when I heard the news this evening that she was pre-recorded I really laughed. I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather,” Franklin said. “When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record ... next time I'll probably do the same.”
“I think it's optional really, it's up to the artist,” Franklin explained. “...She wanted her performance to be what she wanted to be and she realized it wasn't going to be the way she wanted it to be or she was going to be running a risk. That's probably why she pre-recorded exactly how she wanted it to be heard.”
Still, Franklin did not do the same when she performed “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” live in 2009. “I wanted to give people the real thing and pre-recording never crossed my mind,” she said.
Jennifer Lopez also spoke about the controversy on The Daily Show, siding with Beyonce and understanding why she did it.
“Sometimes it happens when you are in certain stadiums and certain venues and things, they do pre-record stuff because you're going to have that terrible slapback,” JLo explained to Jon Stewart, notes Fox News.
The fact that Beyonce didn’t sing live came to light yesterday when a Marine Corps spokeswoman told the media that she had pre-recorded the song. However, another statement was later sent to The New York Times, explaining that the Marine Corps could only confirm that the band was not playing live and could not say if Beyonce only mimed the National Anthem.
