Australian radio show responsible for royal hospital prank call officially cancelled

By Elizabeth O'Laughlin,

The Australian radio show responsible for the prank phone call to the London hospital where Kate Middleton gave birth has officially been cancelled. The prank ultimately led to the suicide of nurse Jacintha Saldhana, who released confidential information to the radio hosts, not knowing it was a hoax.

The audio clip went viral. Before Saldhana’s death, the DJs faced backlash for recording and distributing the nurse's voice without consent, but the joke soon escalated to much more tragic levels.

After Saldhana’s death, the radio show and its DJs were highly criticized. The show was promptly taken off the air.

The parent company of the radio station, Southern Cross Austerio, told The Associated Press the DJs will eventually return to the airwaves.

“We look forward to Mel and MC returning to work when the time is right, in roles that make full use of their talents.”

CNN reports the show has been replaced with a new program called “The Bump.”
