Beyonce’s performance of the National Anthem at yesterday’s Inauguration earned widespread praise, but it might have been too good. According to a Marine Corp Band spokeswoman, the “Single Ladies” singer lip-synched the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
The spokeswoman told The Times that Beyonce had recorded a version of the National Anthem in the studio, as is standard procedure. When given the choice to do it live or go with the recording, Beyonce opted to go with the recording to avoid making any mistakes.
According to The Telegraph, the spokeswoman said it was a last-minute decision.
“We pre-recorded all music as a matter of course and have done since time immemorial,” the spokeswoman explained. “This is our 54th inauguration…There is no question of there not being any music – it’s not because the performer cannot do it.”
The Washington Post notes that few should be surprised by the revelation. Whitney Houston’s 1991 performance was later revealed to be lip-synched. Cellist Yo Yo Ma was also forced to mime his performance at President Obama’s first Inauguration in 2009.
