'The Canyons' producer Brandon Pope says SXSW apologized for 'lack of professionalism in talking to the press' about rejection

If Lindsay Lohan was hoping to aid her comeback with The Canyons, it might’ve been the wrong film for her. The controversial film has been rejected from both the Sundance Film Festival and now South by Southwest.

The film was rejected on behalf of "quality issues."

A festival insider told THR “It’s got an ugliness and a deadness to it.”

Producer Brandon Pope, however, told MTV News "Regarding SXSW, as an alum of the festival, having produced two films that premiered there, I received an email from the head of the fest apologizing for their lack of professionalism in talking to the press.”

He also said in defense of the film, “The Canyons is a controversial, provocative piece of filmmaking. The content of the film is incompatible with provincial film sensibilities. When the film is released, audiences will decide whether it is successful or not."

The Canyons was written by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Paul Schrader, and it co-stars porn star James Deen.
