The CW preparing ‘Vampire Diaries’ spinoff ‘The Originals’

By Daniel S Levine,

The CW is reportedly working on a spinoff to its hit vampire series The Vampire Diaries. The new series will get a backdoor pilot within the show’s current fourth season.

Executive producer Julie Plec has written the episode. If the show gets picked up for a series, she will act as showrunner, reports Entertainment Weekly. It will air on April 25.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff is titled The Originals and will focus on the Original vampire family. In the pilot, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) will head back to New Orleans to meet up with his protege Marcel. Phoebe Tonkin, who currently appears in a key recurring role in Vampire Diaries, will co-star in the new series with Morgan.

Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo is set to executive produce The Originals. Vampire Diaries showrunner Kevin Williamson, who is also working on Fox’s new Kevin Bacon-starring series The Following, will not be working on The Originals.

Alloy Entertainment is co-producing with WB TV and CBS TV Studios.

Plec is also working on The CW’s Tomorrow People reboot with her former Dawson’s Creek colleague Greg Berlanti. She is also working on Paramount’s Tiger's Curse film.

The Vampire Diaries airs on The CW on Thursdays at 8 p.m.
