Dakota Fanning has been cast as film legend Errol Flynn’s mistress in The Last of Robin Hood, which will star Kevin Kline as Flynn.
Deadline confirmed on Wednesday that Fanning, 18, will play Beverly Aadland, who was 15 when the 48-year-old Flynn began pursuing her. She was reportedly at Flynn’s side at the time of his death in 1959. Her mother, Florence Aadland, wrote a book in 1961 that claimed that Flynn and her daughter had a sexual relationship. Susan Sarandon was previously cast as Aadland.
Flynn is best known today as the swashbuckling star of Hollywood action classics like 1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood. However, his private life was filled with scandal, including statutory rape charges in 1942 while still married to Patrice Wymore. In 1957, when he met Beverly Aadland, he helped secure roles for the young actress, including one in Cuban Rebel Girls. He even wanted to co-star with her in Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita adaptation.
According to Cinemablend, the project will be directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland and produced by Killer Films. The directing team also did 2006’s Quinceañera, which focused on teen pregnancy.
Production on The Last of Robin Hood is currently set to start next month.
Fanning just finished work on Effie and is also working on Night Moves. Kline just finished work on the comedy Last Vegas.
