Alicia Keys turns 32 today!
Born and raised in the Hell's Kitchen area of Manhattan, Alicia Augello Cook was the only child of a paralegal and part-time actress mother, and a flight attendant father.
After her parent's split up, Keys grew up with her mother who constantly sent her to music and dance classes.
She began playing the piano at seven years old, citing classical composers, such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin as her initial learning mentors.
At the age of twelve, she enrolled in Professional Performing Arts School, majoring in choir, and graduated as valedictorian at sixteen. She began writing music during her time there.
Alicia Keys then produced her first album, Songs in A Minor, which sold 12 million copies worldwide. The album earned her five Grammy awards. Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys was sold 8 million copies, and added four Grammys to her awards collection.
She has produced five studio albums so far. The latest one is Girl on Fire, containing the hit single of the same name.
After her debut appearance in television when she was four in The Cosby Show, Keys made more appearances on the silver screen in 2007, in The Secret Lives of Bees, Smokin' Aces, and The Nanny Diaries.
Billboard magazine placed her tenth on the Top 50 R&B artists of the past 25 years. VH1 placed her at the top 100 Greatest Artists of all time in 2010.
Alicia Keys had sold 35 million albums and 30 millions singles worldwide throughout her career.
