‘How I Met Your Mother’ officially gets ninth season

By Daniel S Levine,

After all the rumors and reports, CBS has finally confirmed that How I Met Your Mother will get a ninth season, which means that it could still take us longer to finally meet the love of Ted’s life.

CBS and 20th Century Fox TV, which produces the hit show, announced today that stars Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan will all be back. Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will also be back to guide the show’s final season. The network confirmed that we will learn who the mother is.

“Through eight years, How I Met Your Mother has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch phrases,” CBS President Nina Tassler said. “We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”

The news shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last month, it was confirmed that the show would get renewed right after Segel finally signed on. Since the show premiered, Segel has become a well-known movie star, so there were fears that he might want to move on from the show already. Eventually, he signed on at the last moment.

HIMYM has anchored CBS’ Monday lineup since it premiered in September 2005. During its seventh season, the show saw its highest ratings yet. The current season eight is averaging 9.75 million viewers and a 4.0 rating in the key 18-49 demographic.

The show was nominated for Best Comedy Series at the Emmys in 2009 and Harris was nominated for an Emmy in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
