Born on Jan. 25, 1981 in New York, singer Alicia Keys is known for her soulful songs. She turned 32 Friday.
She released her debut album in 2001: Songs in A Minor. Her first album won her the title of best-selling new artist and best-selling R&B artist of 2001. It was a big success both for commercial and critiques. The album was sold over 12 million copies worldwide and earned her 5 Grammy Awards in 2002.
Keys continued her success with her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys. Released in 2003, it sold 8 million copies and earned her additional 4 Grammy Awards in 2005. Later, she released her first live album, Unplugged. This album enabled her to become the first female to have an MTV unplugged album and is the highest since Nirvana in 1994.
Keys kept her success with her third and fourth albums, As I Am and The Element of Freedom. Throughout her singing career, Keys has won numerous awards. Billboard magazine placed her number 10 on their list of Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the past 25 years. VH1 put Keys on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2010.
Keys also set her foot into acting. She appeared in several TV series and movies. Her performance in The Secret Life of Bees earned her a nomination at the NAACP Image Awards.
Key’s latest news is that she will perform national anthem in Super Bowl on Feb.3.
