Jennifer Lawrence's 'I beat Meryl' from 'First Wives Club' not a jab at iconic actress

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

Jennifer Lawrence stirred a bit of confusion at the Golden Globes Sunday evening when during her acceptance speech for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture she quipped, “I beat Meryl.”

Fox News notes that many audience members and viewers at home took the statement as a jab at Streep, who famously dominates every category.

However, Streep was not present at last night’s awards ceremony and Lawrence wasn’t up against the multi-award winning actress anyhow.

Perez Hilton notes that Lawrence wasn’t taking a jab at the iconic actress, but simply quoting from The First Wives Club, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.

Hollywood.com describes the scene as Midler grabbing Hawn’s award and stating, “You know what it says? It says 'I beat Meryl!'" Lawrence’s acceptance featured that exact quote saying, "What does it say? I beat Meryl!"

Lawrence was nominated for her roles in both The Hunger Games as well as Silver Linings Playbook.
