In the battle for most followers on Twitter between pop superstars, Justin Bieber is on top for the moment. The singer has surpassed Lady Gaga as the most followed account on the social networking site.
According to the BBC, Gaga has held the most-followed account crown since 2010 when she passed Bieber. That shows just how good Gaga has been with using social media. She was the first user to hit 10 million, 20 million and 30 million, beating major news outlets and even President Obama.
TwitterCounter, which keeps track of Twitter stats, notes that their fellow pop star Katy Perry is just behind the two with 31 million. Rihanna follows with 27.9 million and President Obama rounds out the top 5 with 26 million.
The rest of the Top 10 is also made up of celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Shakira and Kim Kardashian. YouTube’s official account has the eighth-most followers.
Gaga and Bieber have embraced the friendly competition. Last week, she wrote, “So proud of @justinbieber and all the Beliebers! I'm only happy to see your fans growing in size, you all deserve it! Monsters support you!”
Bieber will likely gain more followers soon. He has a new EP, Believe Acoustic, coming out later this month.
