Kevin Bacon talks transition from film to television for 'The Following'

By Gina DiFalco,

Kevin Bacon is making his small screen debut on Fox’s The Following in his first starring role in a series.

He plays FBI agent Ryan Hardy, who decides to come out of retirement to take on the case of serial killer Joe Carroll, played by James Purefoy, Cinema Blend reports.

But Bacon, who is best known for his 1984 role in Footloose, tells Fox News about his foray into television “In the scope of a career I certainly have explored things of a lighter nature .I certainly like to mix it up. When I was trying to choose a series I wanted to be the hero. I wanted the character to be complex and flawed.”

He’s had a desire to choose a starring television role for a while, but hasn’t found the right role until now.

“I would find, as I was sifting through stories and pilots, I would like something, but I didn’t know if the stakes were high enough,” he said. But with The Following, “I found it to be such a page turner.”

“It will keep you on the edge of your seat,” he said of the show, which premieres on Jan 21. “It will shock you and surprise you. Hopefully you will get drawn into not only what’s going on plot wise but also what’s going on emotionally with these characters.”
