Lifetime drops 'Drop Dead Diva' from network

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

Lifetime has officially passed on a fifth season of Drop Dead Diva.

Cinema Blend notes that there is potential for the series as Sony Pictures TV is considering picking it up.

Although the series continues to have a steady fan base and raked in significant numbers following the season four season finale, Deadline notes that the network opted to pass on the series as they are hoping for an “edgier fare.”

A source familiar with the situation tells The Wrap that the cost of producing the series was becoming excessive.

The network has opted to renew the seventh season Army Wives as well as the second season of the Jennifer Love Hewitt series The Client List. Lifetime will also add Devious Maids, a new series.

The Josh Breman created series stars Brooke Elliot as Jane, Margaret Cho, Jackson Hurt and Kate Levering.

Sony Pictures has not confirmed if they will pick up the series.
