Saturday evening, 23-year-old Mallory Hagan was crowned Miss America 2013.
According to New York Magazine, Hagan, an Alabama native who moved to New York in 2008, beat out 52 other contestants vying for the crown. Hagan competed in series of categories to win the crown, including tap dancing and strutting in a swimsuit, but was most noted for her response to the much-talked about question of gun control.
“I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence. I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period."
The competition took place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, New York Daily News reports. Hagan is currently studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology
According to the report, Hagan is the first woman who was first crowned Miss New York to take on the title of Miss America.
The 23-year-old winner will take home a $50,000 scholarship and will retain the title of Miss America for the next year.
