While the battle between films might be close this Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, Jessica Chastain is guaranteed a big weekend no matter which one wins. The Oscar-nominated actress has two very different films in theaters this weekend - Mama and Zero Dark Thirty - and both have a shot to beat Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand.
Mama is the latest January horror film and was produced by Guillermo Del Toro. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the PG-13 pic is tracking for a $20 million four-day weekend.
Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, which earned Chastain an Oscar nod, will have its second weekend in wide release. Entertainment Weekly predicts that it could gross around $19 million. It won the box office last weekend with $24 million.
Chastain has a shot to not only beat Schwarzenegger, but Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg as well. Wahlberg and Crowe star in Broken City, which has earned bad reviews and cost Fox $35 million to make. It’s expected to make around $15 million over the holiday weekend.
The Last Stand, which is Schwarzenegger’s first starring role since leaving the Governor’s house in Sacramento, is tracking to do about the same. It cost Lionsgate $45 million to make and co-stars Forest Whitaker and Johnny Knoxville.
Silver Linings Playbook is also finally going wide. It’s already made $43.3 million in limited release and now that it has earned plenty of Oscar nods, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress, it’s expected to add over $10 million this weekend.
