The Notre Dame linebacker and his "girlfriend" went public in January 2012, and continued dating until she died in September, a witness said.
The witness came out to be Jan, a Notre Dame superfan, who had built an online friendship with Lennay Kekua, a girl whom Manti Te'o thought to be his girlfriend, TMZ reported.
Jan said that Lennay had never told her that she was romantic with Te'o, and kept it friendly between her and the football star, until January 2012.
The witness reached out to TMZ to explain her relationship with Lennay, and she told them that she believed Ronaiah Tuiasosopo participated in the hoax.
The Notre Dame star had been famous for the past few days for his story his role in the school's football season last year - able to persevere the death of his grandmother and his "girlfriend" Lennay Kekua, but still able to play fantastically, The New York Times reported.
There were numerous speculations about this, that it was impossible for him, a college student, to decide to have a relationship online with another college student, but never met each other.
A blogger Justin Meaghan said that this event resembled a 2010 documentary film Catfish, about a woman creating an online persona to build an online relationship.
