Mariah Carey’s abusive ex-husband takes credit for her success

By Sarah McClanahan,

In his memoir Hitmaker Mariah Carey’s ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, believes he is the reason she is as big a star as she is today.

Although now a mother of two and happily married to comedian and TV personality Nick Cannon, at age 23, Mariah Carey’s life was far from ideal. She was stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship with record executive Tommy Mottola. “That relationship shaped who I am. It beyond shaped me. I still have nightmares about it. I used to wish, hope and dream that someone would kidnap me.” Carey told American Magazine in the spring of 2005.

“For me, to really get out, it was difficult because there was a connection that was not only a marriage but a business thing where the person was in control of my life." US Magazine reports she further revealed to Larry King in 2009.

Fortunately, after four years, Mariah Carey was able to leave Mottola.

Recently, however, Mottola has written a memoir, Hitmaker in which he describes his marriage to Mariah Carey in a much more positive light. In fact, he cites his attitude as the catalyst for her success.

"If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success. My feeling was that there’d be plenty of time for Mariah to celebrate just a little ways down the road. I’m not talking 10 years, just a few." Perez Hilton quotes.
