The new cast for CBS’ Emmy-winning reality show The Amazing Race was revealed today and it includes some contestants with famous relatives. There’s also hockey players who are brothers, YouTube personalities and a professional cyclist. The show’s producers are also promising a new twist.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the newest season will have the pairs travel 30,000 miles across nine countries and five continents. Their challenges will include skydiving in Bora Bora, a Shemozzle race in New Zealand, a hunt for Scorpions in Botswana and climbing Eiger Mountain in Switzerland.
The new twist is just for the first team that makes it to the first Pit Stop. They will get the chance to skip any challenges from the season to skip with two Express Passes, rather than just one as in previous seasons. However, they don’t get to use that second Express Pass. Instead, they have to hand it off to another team of their choice to use after the fourth leg.
The team that wins the race gets the $1 million prize.
Hockey fans will especially enjoy this season, since the Battaglia brothers are competing. Older brother Bates was a longtime NHL player, having appeared in 580 games, notes NHL.com. He played on the Carolina Hurricanes team that lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals. His younger brother Anthony plays for the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
The rest of the teams are as follows:
Idries Abdur-Rahman & Jamil Abdur-Rahman (twin OB/GYN physicians)
Max & Katie Bichler (newlyweds)
Mona Egender & Beth Bandimere (roller derby moms)
Chuck & Wynona McCall (married)
David & Connor O’Leary (father/son team; both cancer survivors)
Caroline Cutbirth & Jennifer Kuhle (members of country group Stealing Angels - Caroline is a descendant of Daniel Boone and Jennifer is John Wayne’s granddaughter)
Joey Graceffa & Meghan Camarena (friends and YouTube personalities)
Pamela Chien & Winnie Sung (friends)
Jessica Hoel & John Erck (dating)
Matthew Davis & Daniel Moss (firefighters)
The Amazing Race’s 22nd season kicks off on Feb. 17.
