Oxygen pulls the plug on 'All My Babies Mamas' following protests

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

The Oxygen series All My Babies Mamas, a reality series which features rapper Shawty Lo with his 11 children from 10 women, has been canceled amid protests of racism.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reality series stirred protests from ColorOfChange.org, a civil rights group claiming that the series promotes false stereotypes.

ColorOfChange.org provides a pre-written letter to NBC Universal seeking the network to shut down the show in a plea which reads, “Don’t exploit black families.”

The petition insists that Shawty’s actions are “inaccurate, dehumanizing and harmful perceptions of Black families” as he cannot seem to remember all of his children’s names, THR notes.

Following the protests, Oxygen has opted to pull the plug on the reality series before its spring debut. An Oxygen spokesperson tells The Wrap, “As part of our development process, we have reviewed casting and decided not to move forward with the special. We will continue to develop compelling content that resonates with our young female viewers and drives the cultural conversation.”

The Wrap notes that thus far, the petition has received over 40,000 signatures.
