Actor Paul Dano has been cast to play rock legend Brian Wilson, the creative force behind some of The Beach Boys’ best work, in a biopic titled Love & Mercy.
Love & Mercy, which shares its title with Wilson’s 1988 solo track, will be produced by River Road. Bill Pohlad, whose producing credits include The Tree of Life and Into The Wild, will make his directorial debut with the project. Atticus Ross, who shared an Oscar with Trent Reznor for The Social Network, will create the film’s soundscape.
Oren Moverman penned the script, which takes an unconventional route in telling the story of Wilson’s life. The film will focus on several key moments of his life, likely including the making of singles like “California Girls” and “Good Vibrations” and the making of the unreleased SMiLE. Dano will play Wilson in his younger years while another actor will play him during the later periods of his life.
Pohland has secured the rights to tell the story of Wilson and his wife, Melinda. She will also play a role in the film and has not been cast.
“I am thrilled that Paul Dano has signed on to play me during one of my most creative explosions and most fulfilling musical times in my career,” Wilson stated on his site. “I still can't believe how cool it is that my life will be portrayed on the big screen and to have Bill Pohlad as the captain of the Sloop John B is amazing! It just makes me feel so humble. I can't wait to see it with a full tub of buttered popcorn.”
Other producers include John Wells and Claire Rudnick Polstein.
Dano is best known for his roles in Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood. In 2012, he starred in Looper and Ruby Sparks.
