Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete Kills’ gets September release date

By Daniel S Levine,

Robert Rodriguez’s anticipated sequel to his B-movie tribute Machete, Machete Kills, will hit theaters in September.

Open Road, which picked up distribution of the film in October, said today that the film will reach theaters on September 13, reports Collider.

Other films opening that day include the dance movie Battle of the Year and the Aaron Eckhart-starring I, Frankenstein.

Machete Kills will feature Danny Trejo, returning to play the film’s title character, a machete-wielding vigilante who is ordered by the President of the U.S. (Charlie Sheen) to help stop a madman from causing destruction on earth.

The film will feature the acting debut for Lady Gaga, who filmed her role over the summer. The pop star will play La Chameleón. Others appearing in the film include Demian Bichir, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Mel Gibson.

In a recent interview with Collider, Trejo was excited about working on the film. “It’s a lot bigger and a lot badder, with a bigger cast,” he said.

“I had a love scene with Amber Heard,” he continued after listing the others stars. “Robert Rodriguez said, ‘Okay, action! Amber, why are you laughing?’ She said, ‘Because Danny won’t stop saying, ‘Thank you, Jesus!’”

Kyle Ward penned the script for Machete Kills. Rodriguez plans on making a third film to finish the Machete trilogy.
