Pop star Shakira and her boyfriend, Gerard Pique, will welcome their baby boy very soon. But before they do, the two are teaming up with UNICEF for a virtual baby shower, asking fans to make donations instead of giving gifts.
In a post on Twitter, Shakira shared a maternity photo of herself and Pique and announced the virtual baby shower.
“Dear Friends, Having our first baby is such an incredibly happy time for us,” the two said in a statement. “That’s why we want to invite you to our baby shower…with a twist. Rather than asking you to give gifts to our new baby, we're asking you to honour him by supporting UNICEF in giving underprivileged babies around the globe a healthy start in life. It would really mean a lot to us.”
Those who would like to donate can give as little as $5, which will provide a mosquito net to keep children safe from malaria, or $10, which will go to polio vaccines. A $37 donation will go to baby scales to help find malnourished children and a $110 donation goes to live-saving therapeutic food.
Shakira has been a longtime UNICEF supporter, first working with the organization in 2003 when she became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The “Hips don’t Lie” singer has visited countries like India, Azerbaijan and El Salvador with UNICEF.
The Huffington Post notes that she also founded Pies Descalzos to build schools in her native Colombia.
