The Office fans were disappointed to hear that Steve Carell will not make a final appearance as Michael Scott in the show’s series finale, but Carell himself has a good reason for his decision.
“I just didn’t think it was right for the character, because that character had had an arch within the story and kind of grew and sort of evolved past the idea of the documentary,” Carell told Access Hollywood at Sundance this week.
The Way, Way Back star explained that he is still friends with Greg Daniels, the show’s executive producer, but he didn’t think it would be right for Michael Scott to come back to Dunder Mifflin.
“I’m really good friends with everybody on the cast and with [executive producer] Greg Daniels and I want to go back to say, ‘Hi,’ certainly, before it all ends, but I just thought, in terms of the character, it didn’t make sense,” Carell said.
Daniels confirmed to reporters earlier this month that Carell wouldn’t return, but promised that other past cast members, including Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak, would make appearances in the final episodes.
“There's still a lot of good things that we have planned for the rest of the goodbyes,” Daniels teased.
The Office’s ninth and final season ends in March.
